State of Hawaii, Department of Human Services (Honolulu, HI) – A rigorous randomized comparison group research design to evaluate outcomes of a project that proposes to increase family finding, family connections work, and family group decision making to (1) prevent children from entering foster care, and if removed, to place them with relative/kin and (2) revisit family connections and permanency options for children in long-term foster care who do not currently have permanent legal and/or emotional family connections. Funded by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, and State of Hawaii, Department of Human Services.

Hale Kipa (Honolulu, HI) – Statewide evaluation of a youth out-of-home placement prevention project. This is an intensive approach to helping troubled youth and families in crises, utilizing the indigenous paraprofessional counselors. This comprehensive multi-island evaluation includes quantitative and qualitative methods as well as process and outcomes data. Intermediate outcome variables assessed include: Family management skills, problem solving skills, self-efficacy, family bonding, social support, coping skills, parental attitudes, family interaction, school grades & attendance, youth sexual behavior. Ultimate outcomes include changes in youth out-of-home placement, youth abuse/neglect, criminal justice involvement, teen pregnancy along, school or employment functioning. Funded by State of Hawaii, Department of Human Services.

Bienvenidos Family Services (East Los Angeles, CA) – Provided data analysis and findings reports in an evaluation effort of adolescent male sexual responsibility and family planning program. Program provided sex education, family planning, contraceptives and abstinence, and importance of taking responsibility for own behavior. Subcontract for Behavioral Assessment, Inc.

Hawaii Community Foundation (Honolulu, HI) – Provide comprehensive evaluation services for a statewide project that spanned 6 years to include on-line survey and site visits to grantees, interviews with staff and participants as well as community stakeholders to assess impact of the initiative on the State of Hawaii communities. Funded by U.S. Department of Justice.

State of New Mexico – Provide data management, analysis, training, and technical assistance services as part of Statewide evaluation of youth substance abuse prevention programs. Includes over 50 sites across state. Subcontract to Behavioral Assessment, Inc. Bay Clinic, Inc. (Hilo, HI) – Comprehensive evaluation of Island-wide youth anti-drug project for the island of Hawaii (Big Island). The purpose of the project is to increase access to substance abuse education, prevention, intervention, and aftercare programs to teens aged 12-17 and to decrease fragmentation of services. In addition to assessing ultimate outcome of substance abuse prevention, the evaluation effort also includes tracking changes in youth life skills (family bonding, self-esteem, cultural identity, problem solving, and avoiding negative peer influence) and school functioning (attendance, grades, sense of bonding and commitment to school). Qualitative evaluation methods include conducting site visits, observing project activities, and interviewing key stakeholders, including participant youth, parents, teachers, project staff, and others in the community. SAMHSA/CSAP funded.

Ke Ola Mamo (Honolulu, HI) – Culturally relevant evaluation of substance abuse & HIV prevention program for transgender youths and young adults of Oahu. Project sites include Honolulu, Waianae, and Waimanalo. Risk and protective factors assessed include religious or spiritual beliefs, self-efficacy, health care seeking behavior, sense of ethnic identity, attitudes toward substance use, and expectations of future safe sex practices. Ultimate outcomes include HIV risk behaviors, prevention of HIV and reduction and/or prevention of substance use. This is a baseline to discharge to 6-month follow-up assessment design with a comparison group. SAMHSA/Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) funded.

State of Hawaii, Department of Human Services (Honolulu, HI) – Purpose of the survey is to gather and report input on the qualities, skills, abilities and other pertinent characteristics that employees and other stakeholders would like to see embodied in the next top leadership positions at the Benefits, Employment and Support Services liision (BESSD) and MedQuest liision (MQD). These surveys were conducted via online website, paper-and-pencil questionnaire, and telephone interviews throughout the State of Hawaii. Data collected were analyzed and reported to DHS to be used as a tool toward recruiting and filling their next leadership positions.
